»Schichtwechsel« befasst sich detailverliebt mit dem Thema Steinkohlebergbau, aber das schleppt man als themenfremder Spieler keinesfalls wie ein Rucksack mit sich herum, im Gegenteil. Zu dem Spielspaß tragen aber die zahlreichen Kombinationen von Boni bei, Einflussmöglichkeiten in einem Zug über die gesamte Fläche des Spielbrettes und die Mischung aus kurzfristigem Reagieren und langfristigem Planen.
